Understanding Hotel Etiquette in Long Island

Posted by Amanda on 9/3/11

A hotel stay is the perfect way for many individuals and families to relax and unwind after a long day of business meetings or sight seeing. With that being said, there are certain terms of etiquette that you should follow during your stay at the hotel. While there are many customs and etiquette tips to follow, these are the five most important to start with.

Tip the Bell Man

While the tip does not need to be drastic or dramatic, you should tip the bellman that helps you with your luggage. A simple dollar or two will suffice, and is a good gesture of thanks to someone who is helping you to carry your luggage.

Tidy Up a Little Bit

If you are planning on staying in the hotel for more than one day, be sure to clean up your things. While you do not need to make the place spotless, a cleaner room will make it easier for the cleaning service to do their job. Placing all of the towels in one area is an especially helpful etiquette tip.

Use the Do Not Disturb Sign

If you do not want to be disturbed, actually use the do not disturb sign. The cleaning service workers will take note, and will give you the privacy you request. If you do not have the sign up, do not be upset when a hotel worker interrupts your sleep.

Continental Breakfast Etiquette

While you may be hungry, be considerate of others when utilizing the benefits of the continental breakfast. If the pickings are slim, and there are guests waiting, be sure to take only what you will eat and need.

Noise in the Halls

While you may be enjoying a vacation, a room two doors down may need to wake up for a business meeting at 6 in the morning. Be sure to be quiet in the halls to be courteous to others who are staying in the other rooms. While some hotels have good, soundproof walls, others may be lacking in this department.

Many have simply never been told that they should tip the bellman. Many people have also never though about the fact that workers could be entering the room after you have left. You simply need to make sure that you are being courteous to these workers; you will often find that the more courteous you are, the better the service that you will receive. Take the time to utilize these etiquette tips during your next hotel stay in Long Island.
