Staying in a Green Hotel

Posted by Amanda on 3/1/11

Vacationing on Long Island for many is all about being able to reconnect with nature. You have been plugged into your city for so long that you have forgotten what it feels like to have the wind blow through your hair and to be able to smell the clean air of the wind coming off of the ocean. This leads many people to return to Long Island again and again every year. The welcome sights and sounds of the island make it where people daydream about seeing the island again the next time they are planning to come out for a vacation. It is understandable that many people will want to take this connection to nature one level deeper and stay at a hotel which has been pronounced to be a green hotel.

Finding a green hotel on Long Island is becoming easier and easier to do with the amount of people who are making a commitment to the environment. If you want to stay in a hotel which is practicing ecologically sound practices, you are sure to find a wide variety of hotels to choose from rather than just a few as you might have found just a few years back. Keep in mind the kinds of methods which the hotel is using to be more green to make sure they are living up to the standards you are looking for in a green hotel to stay in.
The most basic way in which a hotel can be more green is to make sure they have a good recycling program which is in effect. This will make sure the hotel is not generating the kind of waste which has been synonymous with hotels over the years. The hotel will make sure they are leaving less of an impact on the environment by having recycling stations throughout the hotel as well as making sure the services which the hotel offers commits to recycling the packages and other products they are using.

Many hotels have taken to including solar power in the manner of bringing energy into the hotel. While it is not possible for most hotels to run the hotel completely off of solar energy, it is a great way to offset the amount of new energy which has to be created just to keep the hotel in operation. These banks can be found along the roof of the hotel and many will even work the panels into part of the decoration for the outside of the hotel in order to generate as much energy as possible.

Another way in which a lot of hotels are lessening their impact on the environment is by reducing the amount of paper which they are using. This includes making it where you have a reusable key card which is given you to in a reusable key container. The container will be sanitized and reissued along with a card to another guest when staying at the hotel.
