Hotel Safety in the Lobby

Posted by Amanda on 10/23/10

Your vacation is the time when you should be having the most fun. The last thing on your mind is looking out for thieves. You just want to go to the hotel and get your vacation started. Unfortunately, you need to be on your toes at all times. There are those out there who would like to steal from you while you are on vacation. This is because they know you have packed extra things in your suitcase like extra money and cameras and nice clothes and perhaps even some jewelry. This does not mean you have to hire security and watch over your shoulder at every part of the day. It simply means you should practice some simple rules when you are on vacation.

One of the times when you should be on your guard is when you are checking in to the hotel. This is important because you will coming in to the front lobby with all of your suitcases. This is a great time for anyone to see your luggage and get a good headcount on everyone who will be staying in the room. What you want to make sure of is that you first of all keep all of your luggage with you and someone should have their eyes on it. If at all possible, one of your family members should be watching the luggage while you check in to the hotel.

The second thing you should watch out for is to make sure the front clerk is careful when giving you your key. Most hotels have been trained not to say your room number aloud. If you have any concern about it, simply ask them to not say it out loud. It is not necessary for them to do so. It will usually be printed either on the key itself or on the envelope they give you to keep your keys in. The danger of the room number being said aloud is someone only has to watch for your family to leave the hotel and then they know exactly what room number they should be going for.

It is important that you too should be careful when talking about your room number while in public. Do not call it out over the lobby to your kids or your family. Make sure you only get as many keys as you will honestly need and then make sure the whole family has the ability to get into the room at all times. This will serve as a rendezvous if anything should happen to you while you are on vacation.

Most importantly, you will want to make sure you do not show off a big wad of cash while you are in the lobby. Pay in advance for the room with a credit card. This will make you less of a target than peeling off a stack of hundreds when you are paying for things in the lobby. Every time you use cash, it should be in the public eye as little as possible to protect you.
